Debrief #1: Starcloud

How YC's fastest unicorn came to be — a startup debrief on Starcloud, which put a GPU in orbit.

Written for Axiom Pathways.

A 15-person team led by Philip Johnston launched a satellite carrying an Nvidia H100 into orbit for roughly $3M — a fraction of what a single commercial satellite usually costs — betting that space offers something a five-year data-center buildout on Earth can’t: free solar power and easier cooling. This debrief covers why Benchmark and In-Q-Tel backed the round despite the technical risk of running hardware through orbital temperature swings, why the company’s entire hardware stack (SpaceX rockets, Nvidia chips) is technically replicable by competitors, and the central dependency the whole cost model rests on: SpaceX hitting its own launch-cost targets.
