Rand Fishkin taught himself SEO out of necessity, then started publicly blogging everything he learned on SEOmoz simply because the industry was secretive and he didn’t like that — the audience that gathered eventually became Moz’s first customer base, growing the company past $40M in annual revenue without spending on paid ads for six years. The piece frames digital presence as everything a stranger finds when they search your name — website, socials, reviews, content — arguing that ads only send people somewhere, and if that “somewhere” is thin or untrustworthy, the ad spend is wasted; build the destination before buying the directions.
