Lesson 01: The Chicken and the Egg
How to sell an idea without a budget — on Brian Chesky photographing Airbnb listings by hand.
Written for Axiom Pathways.
Before Airbnb was worth anything, a broke Brian Chesky flew to New York and personally rephotographed hosts’ apartments because bad listing photos were killing bookings — a small, deeply unscalable act that doubled the city’s weekly revenue within a month. This piece uses that story to frame the classic early-startup chicken-and-egg problem: you need customers to prove your product works, but proving it works is what’s supposed to attract customers. The resolution, per Chesky’s mentor Paul Graham, is to “do things that don’t scale” — earn trust with individual customers by hand before anything else can follow.
